Michael Touloupas has been named a commended student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship program sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporations.
Touloupas is a senior at Williams High School in Burlington.
He’s one of about 34,000 high school seniors in the United States recognized for exceptional performance on the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Students who were recognized placed in the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students competing in the National Merit Scholarship program.
He is the son of Michael and Cynthia Touloupas of Burlingtons.
EVEN IN OCTOBERs, Alexander Wilson Elementary School’s students and cafeteria workers wanted to make sure U.S. military personnel receive a surprise for Christmas.
Students in third and fifth grades, along with the cafeteria staff, teamed with the Mebane branch of the State Employees Credit Union to collect items on soldiers’ wish lists and wrote letters to thank them for their service.
Donated items were gathered in time for shipping to servicemen and women in time for the holidays. Amy Hargrove, the school’s counselor, coordinated the project.
FOUR TEACHERS at Graham Middle School got grants from Donor’s Choose and the SONIC Limeades for Learning program to provide new opportunities for students.
The school got four netbook computers students will use to create podcasts, movies and presentations and for more interactive math instruction. Other items include a set of novels designed to appeal to male students, art project items and a new sofa for the library. In all, the items are worth almost $3,000.
